Windmill palm is one of the hardiest palms in cultivation, capable of withstanding fairly severe freezes with no damage. In its native habitat, it may even receive a light winter snow cover. Hot tropical climates are not to this species’ liking, and specimens tend to be short-lived in those areas. It has also proven at least moderately susceptible to leathal yellowing. Windmill palm is most useful for providing a tropical accent in warm temperate zones, and grows well in cool summer areas such as coastal California and parts of the British Isles that receive the effects of the Gulf Stream. It is tolerant of partial shade.
