Canary Island Date Palm is highly prized for its formal aspect in the landscape which complements Mediterranean style architecture, and for its hardiness which allows its use throughout most of Florida and parts of California and Arizona. The leaf scar pattern on the trunk is very ornamental. The spread of Canary Island Date Palm require ample room for development even when the palms are young. Extremely tough and durable, this species endures dry conditions and, with the exception of easily correctable magnesium deficiency, poor soils as well. Poorly drained sites, however, should be avoided. Over-irrigation may increase susceptibility to various fungal diseases. Transplanting large specimens should be handled carefully; stressed plants are easily invaded by palmetto weevils which quickly destroy the irreplaceable heart. A fair number of the Canary Island Date Palms sold are actually hybrids of this and other Phoenix species. Blue-green leafed specimens sold as Canary Islands are usually hybrid individuals. |
